Beach Read

This quote I’ve just run across…attributed to Li Po…..Though I’ve not been able to find it…….Oh, it just went straight to my heart, made a Profound Impact, so to speak. Yes, I thought, why?…… Here I am every day rushing about, as if I had somewhere to go, some deadline to meet,,,,,,,But, thanks to happenstance, fate, a bit of luck, an even smaller bit of financial planning……..I do not have to keep my nose honed to a fine point on the proverbial grindstone, at least at this moment in time, however wrinkled, to bring in the beer money. But the problem is that……I am absolutely driven to ‘make stuff’……in fact, can barely let a few days pass by before I’m compelled to assemble Something……Now, if I didn’t also have the compulsion to sell my house and move to a new one every few years, I would have possibly built my own version of Paradise in the front yard, utilizing bits and pieces of the flotsam and jetsam I am prone to collect and assemble into Sculpture,  as far from my classical training as one could get,,,,,maybe not quite as far, but far enough. I’m sure, in the eyes of my old teacher (Leslie Posey) to be fairly assured of a glance of derision by his critical eye.

And so……the point I’m making,is……..I can stop and smell the roses, which is another dilemma, as the only rosebush growing on this half acre was not planted by me, was struggling to survive when I moved here, and still is in dire need of pruning and fertilizing, and near to expiring due to the drought we are experiencing. Still, it (she?) managed to produce several small, but beautiful pale pink roses in early spring, which I did stop and smell, if only for a moment.

And So……

AND SO…..and that’s where this post was left. back in July. The impact of that phrase has lessened. I am working harder than ever. But I have A Goal in mind. More on that later. The roses are gone, the drought has done it’s job.  Vultures are perched around what’s left of the lake, waiting for the demise of the last of the gar.

Not true, fellow Americans and other friends,,,,,,,it doesn’t seem like yesterday at all, it (MY Life) seems long……..Long…….It’s been a long, strange trip, and it may not be over yet. Thanks to the wonders of modern medical science, my body may outlive my brain, and gee whiz, I hope I can see that coming….not smell it coming, mind you, as it’s a fact that an early indicator of impending dementia is the loss of that all-important sense of smell. This is an easy one to do a daily check on, correct? Odors are replete all around us, and particulate, which will be a subject for another day.

But, when I began these choice words, i had no intention of going off on a tangent about aging, or My Life,,,,,,,,,,no, i was going to say this…….

I could say it, I may have said it at some point, but this is a quote by Elvis Costello,,,,,,Apparently someone laughed when he said that. I am beginning to get a glimmer or at least a glimpse of just why things go awry. Really, I’m amazed that anything goes right, given the propensity of  Mankind to argue, fight, and otherwise commit mayhem. And damn it to Hell, Womankind are just as bad. If six people over here say it’s blue, with a touch of green, then four people over there say it was all red, and had wings to boot. And had a French accent.

I had fun here a while back, ranting and raving. A harmless outlet for those dark thoughts that tend to parade around my inner landscape in the wee hours,,although it’s only 6 pm right now, and this little offering wasn’t dark, maybe a light gray.

Love, Peace, Light, and Understanding…….We want it, we need it, we keep pursuing it…in between shopping for just the right skirt, lamp, rug, golf club, fitness club, and on and on……

1. Stop!…….Watering your lawn!……..actually i don’t know anyone personally who waters their lawn……most folks i am acquainted with have the same mish-mash of sparse blades among ant hills that my own yard boasts…….But……the rest of you,,,,,those of you with the lush green expanse of GRASS….

THAT IS OUR DRINKING WATER YOU ARE USING!……Come on!…Wake Up!…….eventually you’ll be forced by law to quit your wasteful, thoughtless habits….Why not quit now!….??

Over 50% of potable water goes for lawn watering in the U.S…..And,let’s just keep it on a personal level here (Big Agriculture,Business, Golf Courses are all culpable)…….But this comes down to you, Joan J.Everywoman and John Q. Public………This is YOU!…..Something YOUcould do to help out, saving a little water for future generations….you remember them, don’t you?……Those little kids who might also like to enjoy a dive in the springs, a clean drink of water, a swim in a central Florida lake.

You see, if you would all simply STOP WATERING YOUR LAWNS!……We, here in Florida, apparently would have plenty of water!…….Wow, this seems like a no-brainer to me………Water crisis/Lawns……???………Simple?…..You Betcha!….

I have suggested this idea to some folks at SJRMD (google that), and part of their response was….”People have a lot of time and money invested in their lawns.”

Tough………People have a lot of time and money invested in dog fighting…….that doesn’t make it right. Hey, you can have a lawn…..Just don’t water it!

While I’m on the water rant…….

“I have no objections to people drinking bottled water in the developing world; it is often the only safe supply. But it would surely be better if they had access to safe tap water instead. The logical response, for those of us in the developed world, is to stop spending money on bottled water and to give the money to water charities.”…….Tom Standage

Now from me again, not quite as Bold as before…….

I do have an objection to people drinking bottled water when the tap water is safe………Which, in the U.S., it generally is, with some exceptions. Why?….Look it up, production, pollution, big waste,plastic leaching into water, and on and on.

And ……Surprise, lots of bottled water IS tap water, from some other town….You don’t know, do you? No govt.regs on that…

Whatever did we do before “they” came up with the brilliant idea of putting tiny quantities of free water into little plastic bottles and selling it back to us????………it seems we had…..a thermos, a clean glass bottle which we refilled somewhere as needed. Yes, that was it. How barbaric.

So, I’ve been thinking of  forming a new group……….with a catchy name like…..”Lawn-Be-Gone” or ???……..”Dawn With No Lawn”……….or “Where Did My Lawn Go?” (sung to the Supremes old tune)

Some thing will spring to mind, I’m sure……In the meantime, keep that hose curled up where it belongs…….

Happy New Year!………just a tad late, but i’ve been busy……..you know how it is………time just slips away, and suddenly it’s Valentine’s Day and soon it will be April Fool’s Day………i’ll know Spring is just around the corner when i see the first spider in the bathroom, those pesty little buggers, just waiting in the shadows, lurking behind the spare toothpaste………why, it’s enough to turn one into a carnivore!……..i’ll bet those wolf spiders are quite tasty stir fried up with a few peppers and onions………Bon Apetitte!

If one ever had a passing thought that politics is a big joke, a farce, a zoo, an exercise in futility. a waste of precious time and resources, one need look no further than John McCain’s choice of a running mate………Just think, we could have had Hillary, a REAL WOMAN. …….Hope I don’t have to pack my bags and move to Mexico.
